Geology Route

With your feet on the trail and your eyes open, we challenge you to identify the 27 Places of Geological Interest that this Route includes.

The strong geomorphological expression, the well-defined valleys, the abundance of water lines and natural springs, the characteristic flora and fauna and the geological diversity, with rocks of relative rarity, give the Serra de Monchique (Monchique Mountain) unique and original features.

The Serra de Monchique (Monchique Mountain), located in the northern sector of the western Algarve, morphologically presents three main units - Picota (773 m), in the eastern part; Fóia (902 m) and Picos (574 m), in the western part - the eastern and western sectors being separated by a northeast-southwest oriented valley.

The Geology Route has two footpaths where Places of Geological Interest (PGI) are identified where some characteristic aspects of the geology of the municipality are highlighted.  On Trail 1 - Marmelete (6,23 km) you will find 13 PGI points and on Trail 2 - Fóia and surrounding area (15.40 km) 14 PGI points.
